Groove & Grub Every Wednesday!

On Wednesday, July 6, 2016 the Garden State Discovery Museum will be kicking off the 4th annual Groovin’ and Grubbin’. We’ve been big fans and have attended every year. The kids have such a blast between dancing and playing, and us grown-ups love all the food. We’ve had so much fun at past Groovin’ and Grubbin’ events.

Groovin' & Grubbin' GSDM

We love this free outdoor concert series and food truck festival. This year, the Museum is excited to announce Camden County will be partnering as a sponsor for the summer long series.  Local gourmet food trucks line the museum’s parking lot from5-8 PM and a different performer takes the stage each week for a 7 PM free family friendly show. Admission to the Museum it is only $5 after 5pm.

The weekly entertainment lineup will be sure to have you grooving in your seat. The wildly popular Ernie & Neal are returning to kick off the summer in style! Families will also see Tim Kubart, Suzi Shelton, Jeff Lyons and Community Rocks. The Museum’s own Discovery Theatre will take the stage outside to perform Robin Hood and CinderElliot, presented by the Horizon Foundation For New Jersey. Visit the www.discoverymuseum.com for a full performance lineup.
The Museum’s parking lot is packed with a variety of food choices to satisfy every taste bud, big and small. Last year, there were nearly a dozen different food trucks that joined the event and this year there will be even more! This year’s lineup includes Waffles and Wedges, Tony & Tori’s Grill, Kona Ice, The Lunch Box Truck, Sweet Lavender, Cupcakes 2 GoGo, Baby Blue’s Rolling Kitchen, Eat-A-Pita, Dump N Roll, Not Your Mama’s Tacos and many more.  Love those summer nights with the Garden State Discovery Museum!
“We are so excited to be kicking off our fourth year of such a successful event with the support of Camden County!  We really loved seeing families gather week after week to enjoy the music, the food, and their neighbors and community,” said Jordan Blau, Director of Sales and Marketing for the Museum. “We have great pictures of toddlers sitting on hay bales with water ice dripping down their arms, big smiles on their faces, laughing and singing with the performers.”
Each Wednesday in July and August, grab some grub from 5-8 PM, jump around in the My Gym moon bounce from 5-7 PM, and catch a performance at 7 PM. With a different performer every night, come once, come twice, come every night!

New Experience with Milly’s Which Craft Art Studio At Garden State Discovery Museum

Milly’s Which Craft Art Studio Opening Soon

Milly's Which Craft Art Studio

Sneak Peek Into New Exhibit

IMG_1845

Last week Friendspired had the opportunity to grab a sneak peek of the amazing new Milly’s Which Craft Art Studio at Garden State Discovery Museum.  This exhibit is so exciting and is sponsored by A.C. Moore.

We love that there will be various sessions for visitors to create art in very unique mediums such as mosaics and papier mache. We love the fact that the artists themselves may even be making appearances thanks to the Discovery Theater artists. We cannot wait to learn how to paint like Vincent Van Gogh with Vincent Van Gogh.

See below for their most current press release.

South Jersey based Craft Corporation Sponsors Local Art Experience for Kids

CHERRY HILL, N.J. MAR 24, 2016— The Garden State Discovery Museum is very excited to announce its newest exhibit, Milly’s Which Craft Art Studio crafted by local South Jersey based craft retailer, A.C. Moore. Unveiling on April 8, 2016 at 11:00 a.m., the exhibit will be a place for children of all ages to learn about and create art.  The art studio will hold sessions throughout the day for visitors to create their very own masterpieces, exploring all mediums from painting and screen printing to mosaics and papier mache.

“Milly’s Which Craft Art Studio Crafted By A.C. Moore celebrates Milly and Herb Iris and their artful life together. Their passion for the arts and belief in Art as a powerful force in transforming lives is reflected in every facet of this new, exciting hands-on exhibit.” Said Garden State Discovery Museum founder, Roree Iris-Williams, “An engaging creative venue for families, school groups, and communities to enjoy crafting and art-making together, the Art Studio is a fitting tribute to my Mom, Milly Iris, who will continue to inspire the next generation of young artists and Art-repreneurs!”

The exhibit will include daily special appearances from the Discovery Theatre sponsored by the Horizon Foundation for NJ players, as master artists teach various creative techniques, including self-portraits signature to the dynamic Frida Kahlo and the thick painting expertise of Vincent Van Gogh.

“It is so inspiring to see our staff pour their creative power into this very special exhibit. There are no boundaries to art and we are excited to give it real presence and space here at the Museum,” said Kelly Lyons, Museum Director, “We’ve been so lucky to first have Milly and Herb Iris inspire the idea and then A.C. Moore come in and give it great wings.  We can’t wait to see our tiny visitors and their parents get crafty.”

The Garden State Discovery Museum will offer a new pottery birthday party option, class field trips, and after hour rental space for painters of all ages.

A.C. Moore will also sponsor four free teacher workshops training teachers with specialized hands-on strategies developed with the Museum’s Education Department to use art across all curriculums.

“Giving back is at the core of everything we do at A.C. Moore and we are elated to partner with one of Cherry Hill’s most beloved neighborhood staples to inspire visitors from both near and far,” said A.C. Moore CEO, Pepe Piperno, “The hope is that this exhibit will bring yet another opportunity to create and share more creativity in our home community.”
In tandem with a creative lineup tailored for visitors, the art studio will house the museum internship program titled, Artist In Residence. The experience will allow students to witness the importance of partnership across all departments, from guest relations to programming and instruction.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for artists and education students alike.  I am especially excited for my [Rowan College At Burlington County] students to be involved in the hands on experience afforded with such an internship,” said Jessica Puma, “The Discovery Museum really builds from within and I am thrilled to present such a rich opportunity to area artists and art students.  Ideas and creativity will abound!”

The art studio will be open to the public during the Discovery Museum regular business hours and slated to host several scheduled classes per day. For more information, visit www.discoverymuseum.com.

Celebrate National Bubble Week

national-bubble-week

photo adapted from Clint Mason

This Week Is National Bubble Week

It’s that time of year again! National Bubble Week. From Monday, March 7th through Sunday, March 13th. Even though the weather is a bit touchy lately and cannot make up it’s mind whether it’s time for short sleeves, or snow shoes – that’s no excuse to stay inside.  So get out there and blow some bubbles.

One of the ways that I make sure we are always prepared to embrace those sunshine filled days is creating a Outside Fun Command Center by our front door!

IMG_6829

Inside we have a fun velcro catch game that I loved as a kid. I have such fond memories of playing with my Nan it was one of her favorite games for outside. There’s also some sidewalk chalk for us to unleash our inner artists. Then the best part is our Gazillion Bubbles hand-held bubble blasters!

Gazillion Bubbles Are The Best

One of our favorite brands is Funrise Toys and Gazillion Bubbles.  They are the best quality bubbles we’ve tested. They have the most popular bubble machine, and now they’ve made that fun a bit more portable with hand-held bubble blasters.

gazillion-bubbles-hurricane-blasterGazillion Bubbles Hurricane Blaster!

Kids can now harness the awesome bubble-blowing power of the Hurricane in the palm of their hand with the Gazillion Bubbles Hurricane Blaster.

gazillion-bubbles-triple-bubble-blasterGazillion Bubbles Triple Bubble Blaster

Create three times the bubbles with the new Gazillion Bubbles Triple Bubble Blaster! Simply pour Gazillion Bubbles solution into the specially designed tray and dip each of the three wands of this handheld bubble blower into the solution. Tap to drain any excess liquid, hold the blaster upright, and press the button to create a gazillion bubbles blowing in three directions!

Each Triple Bubble Blaster comes with a 4 oz. bottle of Funrise’s “top secret” non-toxic Gazillion Bubbles solution and a specially designed tray.

3 AAA batteries required, not included. Ages 3+, SRP $9.99, also available at Toys ‘R’ Us.

Test Your Bubble Knowledge

How does a Bubble Gets Its Color? As waves of light pass through the bubble, it gets distorted by reflecting off different layers of soap film called iridescence. (Gazillion Bubbles is also known to have the most colorful and beautiful bubbles available.)

Can You Freeze a Bubble? A bubble’s shell is composed of a layer of water molecules surrounded by two thin layers of soap. Technically, a bubble will freeze below 32 degrees Fahrenheit like all water. The only problem is that bubbles tend to burst after a few seconds, so in order to truly see a bubble freeze, the temperature needs to fall to about 23 degrees for bubble staying power.

Why Do Bubbles Burst? Anything that fractures the tenuous layer of water molecules can cause a bubble to burst. For example, a gust of wind or an object (like your finger) will easily cause a bubble to burst. Bubbles also burst by simply drying out. Moisture within a bubble causes the molecules to draw closer together enabling the bubble to stay formed for a longer period of time. This is why bubbles tend to work best in high humidity environments.
