Cascade Platinum Shines – Review & Giveaway

Have an opinion to share? Head to the Cascade website to leave a short review of Cascade Platinum ( including #CascadeShiningReviews. One reviewer will win a Kitchen Aid Dishwasher!

Ever wonder why your dishes aren’t sparkling or shining after they’ve been washed in your dishwasher?  Or perhaps why your glasses have streaks all over them?  I know that I’ve been feeling lackluster for a little while now about the performance of our dishwasher.  I’ve even asked hubs, is it the dishwasher, or is it us?

Enter the Cascade Platinum Challenge! A perfect opportunity for us to figure out what it is we are doing wrong. First things first – Did you know there is actually a science to loading your dishwasher?  No, I’m not talking about the rules that my husband thinks are the ways to load the dishwasher.  I am talking about all of the myths that we blindly follow.  Such as – Pre-Wash!  Skip it!!! Did you know you could skip it??

You can, and let me tell you why, it’s because Cascade Platinum works it’s best when there is still food to break down. It has special enzymes that latch onto the food breaking it down so that it can wash away.  If there’s no food for it to latch onto, it won’t do it’s job! You don’t even need to rinse it before going into the dishwasher.  Just remove the large chunks of food and throw them away.

Be sure to follow the actual rules:

  1. Do NOT block the sprayer
  2. Do NOT block the detergent chamber – you can stack your tall dishes in the back, so long as the chamber is not blocked.
  3. Fragile items on top rack.
  4. Set your glasses BETWEEN the tines on the rack – NOT over them.  (one of our problems – which cause the wet spots on our glasses)
  5. Thread any of your long utensils through coffee mug handles to help them stay secure during the wash cycle.
  6. Make sure that there aren’t any stray utensils that can block the sprayer.
  7. Load LARGE dishes on the bottom rack, face down so that the water reaches all the nooks and crannies.

cascade brownie challengeSo, I had made a batch of brownies the night before, which hubby seemed to think were all for him! I let that dish sit the entire time with the dried up batter in it overnight.  Waiting for our guests to arrive so we could show them the power of Cascade.

I have to say, that is so against my nature, I’m used to soaking and then pre-washing before putting into the dish washer. IMG_7596

While I was happy to have something done for prep before hand, that meant the next day it was time to just enjoy a few moments, before trying my hand at the Mac & Cheese recipe from The Pioneer Woman!

With lots of starch, I was curious to see how these would stack up without any pre-wash! I’ll be honest, I wasn’t buying it.

62ef9fe3-e08c-4f43-92e1-329d1449987dNext, some swimming was enjoyed by all.  Some family time had.  It was time to break out that Mac & Cheese.  Surprisingly, for my first go at Mac & Cheese homemade, not from a blue box or with a shiny pack of liquid cheese – I’m pretty pleased with my accomplishment.  It was also kid approved!

After taking a break from swimming, seconds of the Mac & Cheese were had, and little miss was so messy she needed to be changed.  Whoever thought a white onesie was a good idea, was crazy – that’d be Mommy!  She looked like she did a cheese slip & slide.  I’m guessing that the Mac & Cheese was loved so much, she decided to run around like a crazy lunatic and a bin on her head.

Next was time for the big unveiling, and to see if Cascade Platinum passed the test!  What do you think? I was super curious to see how everything would come out in the wash.  So I couldn’t wait to check it out. Especially putting to use all the great knowledge that I gathered while prepping for the challenge.

I was very excited to be a part of this program, and I truly learned a lot.  Cascade’s goal is to educate people on how to achieve immaculately clean dishes every time they put them through a wash cycle. For more information, definitely check out Cascade’s Twitter and Facebook!

Summer Shape Up with Balance Bar

Balance Bar Summer Shape Up

This summer I took part in the Summer Shape Up with Balance Bar!  They had this awesome challenge for 30 days on the Balance Bar Facebook Page.  Each day there was a new fitness challenge that kept you going, a different routine each day.

To start this challenge I headed out to Walmart to get some Balance Bars. I got my favorites Peanut Butter and Chocolate Fudge.  They did have quite a selection to choose from, but I stuck with my standard faves.

I even made sure when we were taking our road trip to Hilton Head to have them packed and ready to go for some noshing.  We definitely needed to remember to have something since our little one keeps us on our toes and super busy.

It was no problem getting in some extra activity this summer since she’s on the go and completely mobile.  Most days besides the shape up challenge I can be found running around after her, or you can find us pushing her on her new swingset – also from Walmart.

Disclosure: In reviewing Balance Bar for this post, I received compensation of a  Walmart gift card.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Resurrecting Recipes – Ralph’s Marinara

When Gaffney’s Gabs first joined the interweb one of the first posts was about Ralph’s Marinara Recipe.  Since a local Italian Restaurant that we were a fan of recently closed, it has me dreaming of yummy italian food.  Reminiscing about one of our faves, I think I have to ask my hubby to take me back there – in the meantime, enjoy this recipe.

One of my favorite recipes is for Ralph’s Marinara!
Living in Southern New Jersey definitely has it’s advantages.  Not only are we about forty-five minutes from Atlantic City, but we are also a half of an hour away from Philadelphia.  My hubby and I often spend many days or evenings being tourists in our own back yard! We love going to Philadelphia, even though he works there EVERY day… we can’t get enough of the great restaurants, events, and the things to do! If you are looking for something great to do, check out my review on City Food Tours – Decadent Gourmet Tour.

Although we have some really great Italian restaurants where we live, like Graziano’s and Filomeana’s just to name a few.  One of my all time favorites is actually in Philadelphia, it’s called Ralph’s!

I think the reason I love Ralph’s so much is the because of the history behind it!  It is actually a historic landmark!!!

It’s a restaurant that has been within this one Italian family for over 100 years.  It’s small and quaint, and the food is unbelievable!!! It is located on 9th street and has been graced with the presence of such celebrities/important political figures as, Theodore Roosevelt, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Tom LaSorda, Sammy Davis, Jr, Michael Keaton, Heather Locklear, and many others!

The dish I always love to get there is the Veal Parmigiana.  There is just something about their marinara sauce that I love.  When talking with a friend about it one day, she said that the recipe was actually on Food Network’s website!

So here is Ralph’s Marinara Recipe! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!!!

  • 1 large Spanish onion, chopped
  • 6 to 8 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 3 (28-ounce) cans tomatoes, crushed by hand
  • 1/2 cup basil, chopped
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/2 chopped parsley, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons tomato paste

Saute onions and garlic with olive oil in a 4-quart saucepan. When onions and garlic are golden color, add tomatoes, basil, salt, pepper, oregano, parsley and tomato paste. Bring to a boil, lower heat and simmer for 1 hour, stirring constantly stirring.
This recipe was provided by professional chefs and has been scaled down from a bulk recipe provided by a restaurant. The FN chefs have not tested this recipe, in the proportions indicated, and therefore, we cannot make any representation as to the results.
